There is something almost magical about a Mardi Gras mask. You can almost feel like another person altogether in the blink of an eye. As many have said and will say again and again, masks have a way about them that are equally revealing and concealing.
Revealing and Concealing
On one hand, you can reveal who you are on the inside, or at least show your hidden fantasies, with the right Mardi Gras mask. For example, if you fancy yourself as an aristocrat in the Venetian tradition, then a Venetian silver mask is the right one for you.

Or if you are from the theater, then either the gold tragedy or comedy mask is a handy one. Or if you want to declare to the world that indeed you are a couple, then matching Mardi Gras masks are for you and your lovey-dovey.
On the other hand, you can also conceal your identity with the right mask. Indeed, many revelers come to the Mardi Gras parade to be able to enjoy themselves behind the anonymity of their elaborate masks! Many flings have been borne of such mystery and mystique although what happens after said qualities have faded into familiarity is all up to the both of you.

Knowing Your History
You may ask how the tradition of masks in Mardi Gras came about. Well, in the olden days when aristocrats and the plebeians were strictly not allowed to mingle during festivities like Mardi Gras balls and parades – except maybe when the plebian was serving the aristocrat hand and foot – the Mardi Gras masks allowed both to party together without fear of ridicule or censure.
Thus, the plebeians had the opportunity to attend the masquerade parties while the aristocrats were able to join in the revelry of the Mardi Gras parades, both without looking over their shoulders. Nowadays, the masks of Mardi Gras are there for a more egalitarian reason – to allow everybody to feel somebody else for a day, each to his or her own.

Choosing Your Masks
Now that we have established that you really need a Mardi Gras mask to be in the spirit of Fat Tuesday, the next step is to choose it. (Did we mention that everybody can wear a mask of their choice even if they only come to the Mardi Gras parade in their basic jeans and tank top?) Of course, the primary consideration in choosing your Mardi Mask is comfort and convenience.
Do keep in mind that you might be wearing, or at least carrying, the mask for hours at a time. Thus, it pays to choose a Mardi Gras mask based on how well it fits your face, how good it looks on you, and how pretty it blends in with your Mardi Gras costume, if you have any. Best advice: Choose a mask that will let you breathe, say, just an eye mask especially if you have mild claustrophobia.
You can have your mask in any color and material you wish although it will be nice to get one in the official Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. Add in feathers, sequins and beads and you are more than ready to pile on the mystery and mystique!
But do remember that New Orleans establishment owners require taking off Mardi Gras masks once you enter their premises. Do follow the law even when having fun.

OOOH! I really love that black one with the feathers! But I wonder if they are itchy? I was thinking about doing a makeup mask again this year but these are better than what I could do with makeup. Thanks for the great ideas!

What’s great about most (if not all) of these masks – you can hang them on the wall for decoration after Mardi Gras is over! They’re so beautiful they shouldn’t be put away in the closet.

These days Mardi Gras masks are now actually used for all sorts of events. You can use them not only at masquerade parties, but now weddings and grad parties, New Years Eve and Halloween. It’s nice to see that they’re back in vogue and it’s something different. I love the mysterious feeling of masquerades – that is if everyone actually wears there masks!

That big feather mask that you have up above freaks me out a bit – I have to admit. I really don’t know why but it does. But the rest of the masks are very nice – love the site anyways. So colorful! I’ll be back.

I thank you for the entry as I didn’t know the exact history of how Mardi Gras Masks originated in the older times. A lovely write up. Personally I have been to many masquerade parties and very much loved to explore pretending to be in somebody else’s shoes by mere masks. Absolutely loved them and especially my Feather Mardi Gras Mask.
A matching Mardi Gras Mask with the Mardi Gras Costumes will help to disguise one’s identity from those at the costume parties, parades, and other celebrations. Your site does a good job presenting a good selection of Mardi Gras Masks.
