Most of the headpieces used during Mardi Gras come in the official colors of purple, green and gold. Of course, purple is the most dominant as it is the most attractive, not to mention that it represents royalty. And so, you will find purple cowboy hats, purple king’s and queen’s crowns, purple top hats and trucker caps, and even purple jester’s hats. Yes, the Mardi Gras is a sea of purple hats, paints and bodies gyrating to the salsa music.
To further add to the madcap atmosphere, you have the outrageous materials used on the Mardi Gras hats! You will find feathers, beads, velvet, appliqués, glitters and the slights show on the heads of many revelers! If you will be so unlucky as to be unable to see the fully-costumed bodies of the spectators and the participants, you at least have the spectacle of hats bobbing to the beat of the drums. It’s a little consolation but definitely better than nothing.
One of the more practical hats used during Mardi Gras – not that the other hats are useless per se – is the drinking helmet. In many instances, it is composed of a simple hardhat engineered to accommodate two soft drinks cans at the sides. This way, you can have protection against the heat of the sun, a hands-free source of hydration and a good costume, all in one thingamajig.
It’s not the best of the Mardi Gras hats – the crowns of the King and Queen of Carnival, meet with the King and Queen of the Mistick Krewe of Comus are better, if you ask me – but it is definitely useful on the road. Now, if only somebody can invent a hat that will grow hairs but that’s neither here nor there.
So, if you are looking for the best accessory possible for your Mardi Gras costume, aside from the embellished thong bikini, of course, then we suggest going for any of the madcap hats!
